The Avalon Park miniature railway

The Avalon Park miniature railway is a long-standing and popular attraction in Lower Hutt

Course: The 1.6km track takes passengers through a tunnel, over a level crossing, and alongside the park’s large adventure playground.

History: The miniature railway has been operating at Avalon Park for over 40 years, with historical photos showing it running since at least the late 1970s.

Operating hours: The train runs from 1pm to 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, as well as during school holidays. Operations are dependent on good weather.

The train and the adjacent mini-golf course operate with a kiosk that also sells drinks and ice blocks. The train is run entirely by volunteer members of the Lions Club, who also maintain the track and equipment. In recent years, the club has put out calls for new members to help ensure they can continue operating this community favorite.
